RN-Nurse Practitioner – Durango Family Med – Full Time
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) has specialized skills and knowledge related to the setting in which they practice. They perform physical exams, collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribe appropriate interventions and medications, and provide direct patient care services according to evidence-based clinical practice standards. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and leadership within the organization and the advanced practice profession.
Duties include obtaining patient health histories and performing comprehensive physical examinations, documenting findings, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, performing procedures, facilitating safe and efficient operational flow, and communicating with inter‑professional teams, including physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advanced practice providers.
Under general supervision, the NP performs physical examinations, treats common episodic and chronic health care problems in the clinic, counsels patients and families, monitors progress, assists with medical research projects, and takes a leading role in clinic operations, patient rounding and care, nursing performance improvement, competency evaluations, staffing, scheduling, and training of new employees. The NP executes leadership in Direct/Indirect Patient Care, Support of Systems, Research, Education, and Professional Leadership.
EssentialDuties
- Conduct in‑depth interviews, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, identify and treat diseases, and manage hospitalized patients.
- Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret results.
- Develop and implement long‑ and short‑range treatment plans.
- Perform procedures such as specimen collection, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection conditions.
- Write orders to adjust medication, subject to physician checking and counter‑signing.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Record patient progress, update charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify physicians of changes.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families on preventive care, medical problems, psychological issues, and use of prescribed treatments.
- Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as the CDC and NIH; assist with medical research projects and obtain IRB approval for protocols.
- Research community resources for referral and refer patients appropriately.
- Maintain compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection control, and accreditation requirements.
- Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations.

- Master’s degree, Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing (MSN).
- At least 5 years of combined education and clinical nursing experience.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, and ability to perform duties successfully.
- Registered Nurse – RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner – NP (CA Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner Furnisher (CA DCA) – Current license to furnish medications in California.
- DEA Certificate – Drug Enforcement Agency Certificate for Schedule II‑V controlled substances.
- NP Board Certified – National Board Certification in NP specialty area (ABSNC or NCCA).
- If working in a hospital/acute‑care setting, must have certification from the ANCC or AACN as an ACNP or AGACNP upon hire (grandfathered if hired before 12/2015).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association (required for hospital/acute and infusion center settings).
