Healthcare Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist
Serves as a valued member of the departmental management team as the RN Coordinator on the floor to provide guidance to other RNs, LVNs, MAs and other clinical staff or administrative staff if performing duties for a clinic. Performs complex and varied administrative and clinical assignments. Serves as a personal contact for physicians, staff, patients and outside departments in order to address problems, issues or concerns that require attention.
Assists in management of clinical unit operations. Serves as the primary competency validator/educator for the clinical staff. Able to provide telephone triage for same day appointments, and oversees a team of triage nurses. As an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients and their families in the outpatient setting, when required.
Ensures patient's right to privacy, safety, and confidentiality is maintained. Maintains a safe environment in accordance with standards, policies, and safety regulations. Ensures compliance with infection control policies. Complex, independent problem solving when overseeing a team of clinical floor staff and patient care coordinators with overlap at multiple practice sites or overseeing patient care if working at a clinic.
- Educate and evaluate nursing staff on patient and family education and nursing competencies.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team, patients, and families, including triage of phone calls and use of e‑mail.
- Organize time, prioritize responsibilities, and assist in overseeing daily clinic operational flow.
- Observe regulatory agency requirements such as National Patient Safety Goals, use of two patient identifiers, avoidance of unapproved abbreviations, procedural timeout, medication reconciliation, audible alarms, hazardous waste and sharps management, HIPAA, OSHA, and TJC readiness.
- Engage in professional development by attending hospital and nursing activities, workshops, and updating patient education materials.
- Receive bonus points for professional certification.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Follow policies and procedures, use evidence‑based care plans, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to identify high‑risk patients and manage care plans.
- Act as liaison between supervisor and subordinates, communicate assignments, monitor pending items, and develop team relationships.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of patient care, provide data on staff performance, and advocate for patients and families.
- Maintain a safe environment, ensure infection control compliance, triage patient phone calls under physician direction, and respond to emergencies using standard protocols.
- Transfer scientific knowledge into practical application of the nursing process.
- Assess patients upon arrival and perform screening as needed.
- Formulate nursing diagnoses based on assessment information.
- Administer medications, complete reassessments, delegate tasks within scope, and advocate for patients.
- Document encounters accurately, keep medication lists current, and ensure complete records.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN).
- 2 years of outpatient or inpatient clinical practice experience.
- Excellent communication skills, including speaking, reading, and writing in English proficiently.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, ability to perform duties including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures per policies and regulations.
- Certified Case Manager (CCM) or other healthcare management certification.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); must be obtained within 30 days of hire if not already held.
- Registered Nurse license from the Nevada State Board (if holding Nevada RN license, CA RN license is exempt).
