The Field Service Technician performs advanced technical work in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage substation equipment. This role ensures reliable substation operation through expert diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting. The technician also mentors junior staff, provides technical guidance, and assists in developing maintenance programs and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Perform installation, inspection, testing and maintenance of substation apparatus, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage regulators, capacitors, reactors, relays, and associated control systems
- Diagnose and repair complex equipment malfunctions, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, safety regulations and company standards
- Conduct electrical and mechanical tests, such as power factor, TTR, Doble, SFRA, insulation resistance and dissolved gas analysis (DGA).
- Maintain accurate commissioning, maintenance records, test results and equipment histories in the asset management system
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring diagrams and manufacturer technical manuals
- Lead and oversee substation commissioning and maintenance crews in daily operations, ensuring adherence to safe work practices and lockout/tagout procedures
- Collaborate with engineers and system operations to plan equipment outages, commissioning and energization of new installations
- Assist in developing maintenance schedules, procedures and equipment specifications
- Train and mentor apprentice and journeyman-level technicians in testing procedures, safety standards and best practices
- Respond to substation outages, equipment failures and system emergencies, including outside normal working hours
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or related field (equivalent military or utility training accepted)
- 3+ years of experience in substation maintenance, testing and commissioning
- Demonstrated experience working with high-voltage systems (69kV–500kV) and apparatus testing equipment
- Advanced understanding of substation design, protection systems and power equipment operation
- Proficiency in electrical testing equipment and software (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger)
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and lead small crews with minimal supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Regular driving and occasional travel (including flying) required
- Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and satisfactory criminal background check
- Able to work overtime, respond to emergencies and travel out of town for extended periods
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US
- NETA Level II or III certification (or equivalent, such as NICET) preferred
- OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, and switching & tagging certification preferred
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
