Overview
Project Engineer, New Product Introduction, Industrial Energy at Tesla.
The Project Engineer at the Tesla Megafactory drives collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver and execute Industrial Energy Storage product change management. This role supports the development of new processes, conducts trials to established specifications, and manages the program from early prototype builds through launch of the production line. It also supports ongoing improvements to scale and sustain Tesla Energy products.
The Project Engineer tests and validates systems and parts in product development and manufacturing, establishes validation standards, develops testing protocols, prepares equipment, documents results, and maintains records. The role identifies, reports, and helps implement improvements to equipment or processes and collaborates with safety, design, product excellence, change control, manufacturing, and service departments.
- Lead manufacturing line trials for new products and processes to ensure product specifications and standards are achieved
- Manage quality assurance and procedures by testing and validating systems and parts; scope and implement new validation standards and procedures
- Conduct trial preparation: ensure part availability, line readiness, and prerequisite data; complete trial reports with observations, analysis, results, and recommendations; drive solutions
- Record issues found during trials and help drive to closure; manage trial recovery and validate/restore manufacturing lines post-trial; evaluate trial success (yield, downtime, cost, safety)
- Serve as subject matter expert (SME) on trials to ensure proper validation procedures are followed; become an expert-level trainer in assigned areas and oversee knowledge of shift technicians
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to scope and execute target outcomes
- Communicate effectively within a manufacturing and engineering organization (strong written and verbal communication)
- Lead and provide feedback in change control meetings using first-principles thinking
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
- Understanding of manufacturability, process design, process validation, and assembly methods
- Aptitude to learn and incorporate new technologies
- Experience breaking down high-level performance issues into actionable items; ability to identify issues and implement corrective measures
- Skill with electrical and computer-based tools, precision measuring equipment, electrical test equipment, and computer databases; applies principles and policies for specialized projects
- Ability to work under pressure with tight timelines and manage multiple tasks with competing priorities
- Strong problem-solving skills and quick learning of systems; use of DMAIC, Ishikawa, 5 Whys, or 8D techniques to resolve issues
- Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, including occasional extended hours
- Excellent written and verbal communication within a manufacturing and engineering organization
Expected Compensation: $75,600 - $113,400 annual salary plus cash and stock awards and benefits. Pay may vary based on location, knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details provided if an offer is extended.
