Job Description – Requirements

Kennametal seeks an experienced candidate in Material Science and Engineering, Chemical, Solid State, or Physical Science and Engineering for a position at our research facility in the Pittsburgh, PA region. A minimum of a B.S. degree and three years of practical experience in the relevant field are preferred. Knowledge of physical metallurgy, especially in powdered metals, hard metals, metal alloys, or industrial ceramics, is highly desirable.

Additional knowledge in metal powder particle manipulation, surface science, coatings, and polymer science is beneficial. Practical experience in manufacturing or lab-scale processing is a plus. Skills such as project management, process and thermodynamic modeling, statistical data analysis, powder formulation, characterization, and binder system design are advantageous.

The role involves working under the supervision of the Manager to develop new materials, processes, and technologies related to hard metal powder design, synthesis, and application. The candidate should demonstrate strong communication, troubleshooting, and independent working skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team. Time management and prioritization are critical, and a desire to join a dynamic research and manufacturing team is essential.

Job Description – Tasks

• Establish expertise in materials, processes, and technologies for enterprise support.
• Support product and process development, intellectual property, quality, manufacturing, and EHS initiatives through hardmetal powder process development.
• Lead a technical team in standardizing and deploying cost-effective processes.
• Initiate and manage technology, manufacturing, and capital projects.
• Implement system improvements, including measurement analysis to enhance process consistency.
• Provide technical assistance to manufacturing as needed, remotely or on-site.
• Engage with the hardmetal community through industry associations and publications.
• Lead data-driven analysis and decision-making processes.
• Maintain internal procedures and work instructions.
• Assist with vendor and material qualification and prepare specifications.
• Research and develop new technologies and processing methods.
• Travel up to 25%, depending on project needs.
