Description
Position Title: Painter
Reports to: Maintenance Manager/Trades Supervisor
Supervises: Temporary workers as assigned
Primary Function: Prepare walls and other surfaces and perform for painting and staining of College, Abbey and Seminary buildings.
Required Qualifications: 3 to 5 years previous painting experience. Knowledgeable in use of appropriate materials, tools, methods and techniques of the painting trades following best safety practices. Able to read and interpret drawings and written instructions.
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Essential Duties
- Work involves the preparation of finished or unfinished surfaces and the color matching of paints in accordance with standard practices of the painting trade.
- Applies a variety of paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces by accepted application tools and techniques, such as brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
- Work assignments are received through written work orders or verbal instructions from the Trades Supervisor or other members of the FMO staff. Complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Submit documentation of completed work orders to monitor time and costs. Report material usage and costs of purchases.
- Work is performed with independence on projects and is reviewed by a Trades Supervisor for timely completion of projects and compliance with specifications and standards.
- Perform patching of plaster and preparation of drywall.
- Prepares surfaces to be painted by stripping paint and sanding surfaces using heat guns, sandpaper, sandblasters, scrapers, chemical paint solvents, or vacuum-type sanders.
- Performs repairs to surfaces to be painted using spackle, plaster, or other appropriate materials.
- Assembles and disassembles scaffolding; hauls and erects ladders; cleans brushes, rollers, spray guns, and work areas; and makes minor repairs to equipment.
- Caulks window frames, door frames, and other areas.
- Applies wallpaper or vinyl covering.
- Performs painting of parking lot lines and handicap areas.
- Provide set up support by working with the carpenter to build and paint wall and booths in event rooms and other locations.
- Required to assist in other assignments such as grounds maintenance, event setup and teardown, projects, moves, renovations and remodels.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety practices of the painting trade.
- Ability to apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray guns to a variety of interior and exterior surfaces in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
- Ability to use and maintain paint brushes, rollers, spray guns and other painting tools and equipment.
- Maintain paint shop in neat workmanlike manner. Maintain inventory and supplies.
- Move furniture and equipment in order to perform work assignments.
- Ability to work at heights from scaffolding and ladders and roofs.
- Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions.
- Subject to being on call, work weekends and nights as needed to complete scheduled or emergency work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Daily interaction with students, faculty, staff, department heads, vice presidents, department directors and others.
- Work with outside contractors and vendors.
- Assist in winter snow and ice removal as assigned including shoveling, operating snow removal equipment and applying ice melt.
- Work involves considerable physical activity including lifting, pulling, or pushing objects weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally need to lift and or manipulate heavy objects.
- Must understand and follow safety precautions and procedures both verbal and written.
- Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements of dirt, biohazards, dust, temperatures, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or noise.
- Must be able to stand, bend, stoop and walk for extended periods of time.
- Environment may involve some exposure to hazards, such as chemicals, and physical risks that are mitigated by and require following safety rules and precautions and using MSDS product sheets.
- Must be able to adjust to continual changes in work assignments and scheduling.
