Overview
Materials Microscopy Specialist to support the research and development of innovative materials solutions through high-resolution imaging and materials analysis. You will collaborate across disciplines and research topics to characterize materials using advanced optical and electron microscopy tools, including SEM and EDS. You will also serve as a central contact point for coordinating lab operations, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols, ensuring smooth and safe laboratory functioning.
Responsibilities- Performing hands-on imaging and analysis of material and hardware samples using optical and electron microscopes (e.g., SEM, EDS).
- Preparing samples for microscopy using techniques such as mounting, polishing, coating, and sectioning.
- Collaborating with research staff to develop and execute imaging plans that support research objectives.
- Supporting research activities by managing microscope scheduling, coordinating equipment maintenance, and maintaining imaging quality standards.
- Leading day-to-day lab operations, including ensuring laboratory safety, managing supplies and consumables, and coordinating with facilities.
- Associate s degree in a technical field such as Laboratory Technology, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of experience in the microscopy of materials and structures.
- Experience operating and maintaining microscopy equipment (SEM, EDS, optical) in a research and development environment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills to effectively coordinate among multiple teams.
- Adaptable, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks in a dynamic lab setting.
- Ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is required.
You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have:
- Experience performing EBSD or metallographic analysis for research or production.
- Skill in using laboratory instrumentation and the ability to quickly adapt to new equipment and techniques.
- Experience documenting imaging results and maintaining laboratory records or data logs.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated. APL may offer bonuses or other compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation.
Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
