Overview
2026 Graduate – Chemist/Chemical Engineer - Applied Chemistry and Physics at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). This role targets graduates with a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering to work on high-impact problems in applied chemistry, developing sensors, detectors, and chemistry-based analytical tools for national defense, health, and environmental science. You will collaborate with physicists, engineers, analytical chemists, and biologists on multidisciplinary projects.
Responsibilities- Help design, build, test, and evaluate scientific instrumentation addressing concerns related to national defense, terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction.
- Synthesize and evaluate new molecules, polymers, and biomolecules to support chemistry research projects related to defense, national health, and environmental science.
- Perform hands-on laboratory work as part of a team to develop solutions to applied chemistry and physics problems.
- Bachelor’s in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related technical field, with a strong academic record.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Able to travel occasionally to attend meetings with government partners and operational stakeholders.
- Able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by start date and eventually a Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required for eligibility for access to classified information.
- Master’s in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, or related field with strong academic record.
- Experience performing hands-on laboratory research, including internships.
- Experience in data analysis and scientific reporting.
- Ability to apply creativity and laboratory experience to address national defense, terrorism, and WMD concerns.

CompensationBase pay range: $85,000.00/yr – $/yr. The posted range is determined by JHU APL in good faith at posting time; actual compensation may vary based on location, experience, education, and internal parity. Supplemental compensation may include bonuses, relocation benefits, and other forms of pay per internal policy.
