The Role Senior Software Engineer - Cyber Missions

Location:

Laurel, MD Join Peraton's high-impact Cyber Missions Team and help build mission-critical capabilities that directly support national-level cybersecurity operations. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is passionate about solving complex problems, creating scalable systems, and shaping innovative solutions using cutting-edge cloud and AI technologies. In this role, you'll be a key contributor on an integrated product development team, driving the full lifecycle of agile software design and development.

You'll help design, build, test, and deploy a full-featured service running across large-scale compute clusters and AWS cloud infrastructure while continuously improving performance, reliability, and user experience.
What You'll Do
* Lead and support all phases of agile software development, including design, development, testing, integration, and deployment

* Build and optimize distributed systems running at scale across AWS and high-performance compute clusters

* Apply advanced AI techniques-such as LLMs, RAG, and agentic AI-to enhance system capability and automation

* Improve performance, reliability, and scalability through tuning, monitoring, and observability best practices

* Support ongoing operations, sustainment, and enhancement of mission-critical services

* Mentor junior engineers, provide technical guidance, and contribute to architectural decision-making

* Evaluate technical requirements, estimate effort, and create high-quality designs and documentation

What You Bring Technical Expertise
* Hands-on experience with LLMs, RAG frameworks, and agentic AI systems

* Deep understanding of AWS cloud architecture, services, SDKs, and APIs

* Strong proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Cloud Formation or Terraform

* Experience with observability and search platforms (Elasticsearch, Open Search, etc.)

* Solid grounding in CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment, and monitoring

* Strong Java development skills for distributed, networked, multi-threaded systems

* Agile development experience with modern source control and collaboration tools

* Strong Linux fundamentals and the ability to script in languages like Python, Ruby, or Perl

* Familiarity with microservices architectures and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes)

* Understanding of security and compliance best practices for cloud-native systems

Position Requirements :
* 20+ years of software engineering experience supporting programs of similar scope and complexity.

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or 4 additional years of relevant SWE experience in lieu of a degree).

* Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph.
