The Laboratory Intake Associate is responsible for receiving, labeling, tracking, storing, and maintaining the integrity of all laboratory samples in the Chemistry and/or Microbiology laboratory. This role ensures proper documentation, chain‑of‑custody compliance, and adherence to regulatory and safety standards. The custodian plays a critical role in supporting laboratory operations by ensuring samples are accurately logged and readily accessible for analysis. The custodian ensures that proper communication channels are established to communicate sample disposition and other pertinent information to interested parties.
The custodian is committed to ensuring the integrity of the sample submission process by following all relevant laboratory procedures as assigned.
- Receive and log incoming samples following established protocols
- Assign unique identifiers and ensure accurate labeling of all samples
- Maintain detailed records of sample custody, location, and status
- Store samples under appropriate environmental conditions (e.g., refrigeration, freezing, ambient)
- Monitor incoming sample disposition including temp checks when required
- Ensure compliance with chain‑of‑custody procedures and regulatory guidelines
- Coordinate with laboratory staff to retrieve and deliver samples for testing
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of sample storage areas
- Assist in audits and inspections by providing sample documentation
- Report discrepancies, damaged samples, or non‑compliance issues promptly
- Serve as backup sample courier
- Coordinate pickups and deliveries with external couriers (e.g. Fed Ex and UPS) as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in science or related field preferred
- Prior experience in a laboratory or sample management role is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and regulatory standards
- Basic computer skills and experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
- Ability to lift and move sample containers (up to 60lbs)
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
- Knowledge of hazardous material handling and disposal
- Experience with temperature‑controlled storage systems
- Understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
- Work is performed in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and biological materials
- May require standing for extended periods and handling refrigerated or frozen items
