This is a hands-on hardware role for someone early in their career who likes building physical things. The work covers designing and building custom parts, mounts and enclosures, wiring in sensors and motors, and taking each project from CAD to a working install in the lab. A strong candidate brings a mechanical, mechatronics or robotics degree plus real build experience from a thesis, student team or personal project, and the habit of tracing a fault to its root cause.

How it fits the AI era

The lab is meant to be used by AI agents, so the hardware has to run for long stretches with little human help. AI tools may speed up design, troubleshooting and assay development, but someone still has to make machines move, fit and hold up in the physical world. Judgment about reliability, safe workshop practice and fixing what breaks stays with people.

How it builds AI experience

The role offers close exposure to how AI-designed proteins get tested in a real, automated lab, where software, instruments and biology meet. Working beside automation and software teams shows how physical equipment gets turned into something controllable by code. Picking up basic Python and learning how sensor data feeds monitoring would build useful AI-era skills.
