0.75 Kindergarten
- Grade 2 Classroom Teacher/ Reading Specialist (0.25) Teaching position. Duties to commence September 8, 2026 to June 25, 2027.

As the successful candidate, you are committed to furthering the goals for student success in an inclusive, safe and caring environment. You subscribe to a “students first” philosophy in your practice and believe that collaboration is key for your growth as an educator. This is a school-based position working collaboratively with NLSchools and school personnel to support responsive teaching and learning in literacy with a focus on reading.

A reading specialist is a reflective, self-directed, lifelong learner, who will mentor teachers to improve efficacy in the teaching of reading.

As a literacy leader and advocate for all students, the reading specialist will promote the goals for student success in a safe and caring environment where engagement, equity and excellence are fostered. The Reading Specialist has a “students first” philosophy in their practice and believes that collaborative trusting relationships is key for professional learning.

If selected for an interview, candidates should be prepared to speak about their experience and demonstrated competencies in relation to the 8 Standards of Practice for Classroom Teachers (outlined below):.

  • Know the content and teaching strategies
  • Ability to plan and implement effective, responsive, teaching and learning
  • Ability to assess, provide feedback, and report on student learning

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Engage professionally with colleagues, families and communities.
  • Demonstrate the planning and implementation of effective and responsive teaching and learning practices.
  • Provide evidence of how to shape a safe and positive learning environment for students and families.
  • Demonstrate a love of learning and an ability to build learner and leadership capacity.
  • Provide evidence and understanding of the impact of effective assessment practices.
  • Current knowledge of research and evidence-based practices in reading instruction.
  • Self-directed learner who engages in sustained professional learning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in evidence-based teaching and assessment of reading.
  • Experience in collecting and analyzing evidence of student learning.
  • Models, promotes, and uses responsive teaching to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulties and those who are very capable.
  • Experience in creating and co-creating professional learning opportunities for school and educators
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of professional learning models for educators.
  • Leverages technology to promote equity in professional collaborative learning networks.
  • Strong leadership skills enabling advocacy in literacy learning by establishing trusting relationships with students, teachers and families.
  • Willingness to work in more than one school, if assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Education
    - Primary/Elementary
  • NL Teaching Certificate
    - Level IV or higher
  • 5 years of successful teaching experience in K-6.
  • Appropriate Training Methods
  • Masters of Education (Reading/Literacy, Teaching and Learning) would be an asset
  • Equivalencies will be considered

Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.

Applicants without the required qualifications may be considered in accordance with Clause 37.01 (d) of the provincial collective agreement.
