Cultural Language Groups
WHERE:The city of Laval has the highest concentration of Arab-language speakers in the Province of Quebec, closely followed by the city of Montreal.
ABOUT:Combined Montreal and Laval have almost 200,000 Arabic speakers. 1 Many hail originally from parts of French speaking North and West Africa, while many of the older Arab-language population were from Lebanon and other parts of the former Ottoman Empire. Thus, besides English, French and Arabic are preferred linguistic skill sets, thoughnot an initial requirement. Language-learning skills are preferred and may be required.
HISTORY:Arabic speakers have been coming to Quebec since the late 19th century, with the first waves coming from Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine. Of these early emigrants from Lebanon were Christian (Marionite) and Druze, along with Muslims. Later waves of immigrants are Muslim and even irreligious, and they are often well educated and skilled, though there frequently are credentialization challenges to practice in their field of expertise resulting in underemployment.
