In-School Volunteer for Students Impacted by Incarceration at Lawndale High School

Join to apply for the In-School Volunteer for Students Impacted by Incarceration at Lawndale High School role at POPS the Club Books

POPS the Club started in 2013 at Venice High School as a method of supporting youth who have loved ones in prison to hope and healing. POPS was established as a 501(c)3 in early 2014, and as of June 2019, clubs have been established in eight high schools in Los Angeles, as well as in Georgia, New York, and Pennsylvania. POPS publishes an annual anthology of POPS students' and graduates' writings and artwork.

The impact of the support of peers, a curriculum focused on self-expression, mindfulness, and community engagement has been profoundly healing.

POPS creates, oversees and supports clubs that meet weekly throughout the academic year in high schools. POPS was created to support students who have been impacted by the carceral system. Most club members have parents and/or other loved ones who are or have been incarcerated; some students have been incarcerated themselves; and a number of students have family members who have been detained and/or deported.

POPS is looking for volunteers for Lawndale High School's meetings, these meetings are held weekly. This opportunity will start in Fall 2023 and continue through the end of the academic year.

Responsibilities and qualifications for the role are not explicitly stated, but the volunteer will be working with students who have been impacted by the carceral system, and will be participating in the POPS curriculum, which encourages students to find and use their voices in conversation, writing, artwork, and other types of creative expression.

  • The volunteer will be working with students in a high school setting.
  • The volunteer will be participating in the POPS curriculum, which focuses on self-expression, mindfulness, and community engagement.

POPS is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from diverse candidates.
