Position Overview:
The Department of Classics invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for part- to full-time temporary and/or regular lecturer and/or online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online courses or regular courses. Instruction can include assisting and leading discussion sections in multi-section courses. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester, for the development and/or instruction of course(s).
The primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the online course(s). Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in Classics consistent with departmental instructional needs.
The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.
- Regular Lecturer Duties (100%):
Teach a specified number of undergraduate or graduate courses per semester in Classics, Greek, or Latin. Prepare for and attend all class meetings. If absent, arrange an appropriate substitute. Do not cancel classes. Provide instruction throughout the semester, develop material for class sessions and/or discussion sections, lead discussion sections, grade assignments in a timely manner, and provide students with clear information about progress and how to improve.
Hold regular office hours (minimum three hours per week, across at least two and preferably three days). Be available for reasonable appointments. Maintain an orderly grade book and clear records of evaluations. Submit materials to the department at the end of the semester. Maintain standards of teaching and adherence to policies. - Online Lecturer Duties (100%):
Teach a specified number of undergraduate or graduate courses per semester. Prepare for and attend online class meetings if applicable. Provide timely feedback and instructor/student interaction in asynchronous online formats with regular weekly interaction. Deliver instruction in courses typically formatted in 8-week or mini-semester terms; online meetings are generally asynchronous with expectations equivalent to face-to-face courses. Administer assignments, tests, evaluate work, provide timely feedback, and assign grades.
Be available for students; office hours may include set times plus timely responses outside those times. Adhere to departmental, college and university policies. - Online Course Developer Duties (100%):
Build online courses for the unit and/or College Online Programs. Design the course in accordance with departmental guidance and KU standards, collaborating with instructional design staff. Work in a collaborative environment with other instructors. Complete the course design process within deadlines to ensure quality review prior to offering.
- Required Qualifications
: MA degree (undergraduate teaching) OR PhD degree (graduate teaching) in Classics, Art History, or related field. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively as evidenced by cover letter, teaching history, and resume. - Preferred Qualifications
:
PhD in Classics, Art History, or related field. Record of scholarly publication and professional activity. Experience as curator and/or excavation experience. - Application materials: letter of application, vitae detailing subject areas, and three professional references.
