Consolidated Fire District #1 in Douglas County, KS is seeking a qualified Assistant Fire Chief. CFD#1 serves an unincorporated area of 228 sq. miles with a population of approximately 11,000 and provides an all-hazards fire and EMS response with 6 full-time, 3 part-time, and over 60 paid-per-call members with a volume of over 1,100 calls per year and an average growth of 7%.

The Assistant Fire Chief is a key member of the department’s leadership team, providing operational, administrative, and strategic support to the Fire Chief. This position plays a vital role in advancing the organization’s mission, enhancing service delivery, and fostering growth to meet the evolving needs of Douglas County. The Assistant Fire Chief assists in the management of a combination career/volunteer fire department, ensuring operational readiness and promoting professional development.
Key responsibilities include assisting in policy and budget development and implementation, serving as a liaison between career and volunteer personnel to foster collaboration and teamwork, responding to emergency incidents, and supporting stakeholder engagement initiatives. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain working relationships with diverse co-workers, community members, and customers.
- Current and maintained EMT (or higher) certification and completion of ICS 300
- IFSAC/Pro Board (or equivalent) certifications:
Fire Officer 1 & 2, Driver Operator, and Instructor 1 - Significant experience in firefighting, EMS, and leadership roles within a fire service organization
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with both career and volunteer personnel
- Strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of firefighting and emergency response
- IFSAC/Pro Board (or equivalent) certifications:
Fire Officer 3, Instructor 2, and Inspector 1 - Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or related field
- Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, grant administration, and community engagement
- Additional certifications in EMS, Wildland, Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and Incident Command
The starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
The minimum starting salary range for this position is $85,000.00 year and includes access to excellent benefits, such as:
