Security Officer
Position Overview:
The Security Officer at the University of Kansas is responsible for securing locks on buildings and rooms in academic and business facilities across various KU campuses, providing patrol inside these facilities, reporting security, maintenance, and code compliance problems, and supporting the University of Kansas Police Department in a non‑law‑enforcement capacity during emergencies and major events. The position requires extended walking and stair climbing and may involve day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Make regular inspection tours of assigned buildings, including walking long distances and climbing stairs in various conditions, checking doors, windows, and gates for appropriate security and reporting maintenance, code compliance, criminal and non‑criminal matters, and ensuring buildings are locked or unlocked according to the daily schedule and reservations.
- Safeguard the University against hazards, safety issues, and property damage by detecting audible alarms (fire, intrusion, trouble), reporting to the proper authorities, and taking appropriate action to eliminate immediate danger.
- Respond immediately and provide building access during emergency situations, assist in building evacuation, perimeter control, and report life‑threatening conditions or property loss.
- Complete and submit accurate activity logs, maintenance reports, and timesheets in a timely manner, recording detailed information such as security lapses and unauthorized persons.
- Remain knowledgeable of state fire codes, University safety guidelines, and policies, attend training, and assist in orientation and training of new security officers.
- Maintain proper care and control of department equipment and vehicle, use radio techniques and procedures, and keep all issued equipment in good repair.
- Perform security responsibilities at special events, including basketball and football games and other assignments on university campuses.
- Establish and maintain professional contact with University employees, residents, and others, presenting a professional demeanor and well‑groomed appearance.
- U.S. citizen or non‑U.S. citizen legally able to perform work in or for the United States, with required documentation.
- Free of any diversion for or convictions of felonies and serious misdemeanors.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must pass a thorough background check.
- Ability to perform all essential job functions and not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of self or others.
- High school diploma or completion of a G.E.D. equivalency.
- Experience in a post‑assigned security position.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer.
- A cover letter addressing how required and preferred qualifications are met.
