Position OverviewKU Recreation Services provides resources for wellness, physical fitness, team and individual sports, group fitness classes, and personal training. Indoor and outdoor facilities accommodate a broad range of athleticism from beginners to seasoned athletes.
Responsibilities- Daily operations of Cardiovascular/Resistance Training (CRT) areas at Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center.
- Provide a safe exercise environment; assist patrons; enforce policies; clean and organize equipment.
- Shifts include early morning, afternoon, evenings and/or late evenings during the week and weekend.
- Required CPR/AED certification or obtain within four weeks after appointment.
- Risk Management (25%) – Monitor all fitness areas, enforce policies, pick up and organize equipment, ensure proper technique, spot lifts, implement emergency procedures, maintain CPR/AED certification.
- Cleaning Responsibilities (25%) – Pick up and sort dirty towels, fold clean towels, replenish towel stations, refill disinfectant solution, hourly cleaning of all equipment.
- Customer Service (15%) – Answer participant questions, assist with lockers, demonstrate equipment use, knowledge of exercises.
- Other (10%) – Substitute shifts, report maintenance requests, use two-way radio, complete shift reports, manage TVs, attend staff meetings and trainings, other duties as assigned.
- Experience using cardiovascular and resistance training equipment including selectorized machines, plate loaded machines and free weights.
- Excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials/interview.
- Previous experience working in a recreation center, weight room, health club or gym setting.
- Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health or related major.
- Self-starter and takes initiative as demonstrated in the application materials.
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must be enrolled in at least 6 hours in the past spring semester or be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester.
Employment Conditions- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved.
- This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position concurrently.
- Weight Room Specialists are required to attend all-staff training on Tuesday before fall semester, August 18, 2026 and a staff meeting on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
