Job SummaryThe Department Chair position is a faculty-ranked position with administrative responsibilities and is a 12-month position. The department chair works in collaboration with the Dean to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the health sciences program. As a member of the health sciences faculty, the department chair also contributes to the work of the department through teaching (half-time), remaining active as a scholar, and through student engagement and service.
The department chair must have the capability to effectively manage course scheduling, budgets, personnel and facilities, lead curriculum development, cultivate and maintain external partnerships, and carry out other department leadership functions. Candidates must be able to embrace and work with GGC's global student population. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Health Sciences.
Responsibilities- Assign faculty teaching duties and complete schedule of classes, practicum rotations, and labs in collaboration with faculty and staff
- Complete annual evaluations of faculty and staff direct reports
- Coordinate and supervise faculty searches (both FT and PT)
- Coordination of program-level assessment initiatives
- Recommend and coordinate personnel actions (i.e. academic leave, promotion, merit raises, appointment reset, appointment renewal) to the Dean
- Manage student issues, grade appeals, complaints, petitions, and faculty issues in accordance with SHS faculty and student handbooks and GGC Administrative Policy Manual
- Doctoral degree in public health, health sciences or related field
- Relevant academic administrative experience; preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of academic leadership experience at the program level or higher.
- A record of effective teaching, service, student engagement, and scholarly activity within the candidate's area of specialization.
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills; including a well-developed sense of fairness and integrity.
- Record of excellence in teaching, service, student engagement and scholarship/creative activities
- Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Must be collegial with faculty, staff, and students.
- 3-5 years of experience in higher education
- Proficiency with D2L Learning Management System, Banner INB, & Microsoft Office Software
- Background in any of the following areas:
Public Health, Health Administration, Health Promotion.
