Job SummaryThe Limited Term Sign Language Interpreter provides sign language interpreting for students who are deaf, primarily for in-person and online classes, meetings, and other college-wide activities. Additionally, the position recruits, screens, and mentors contracted self-employed interpreters to provide services to GGC students. The Sign Language Interpreter dispenses training and resource information to faculty and students when appropriate and upon request.
This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) and is responsible for reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report in accordance with the Federal Clery Act and GGC policy.
The continuation of this position is contingent on available funding.
Responsibilities- Provides 20+ hours of sign language interpreting per week appropriate to students' mode of communication
- Assesses students' communication mode and provides sign language appropriate for each student for best access
- Provides interpreting to current and potential students as needed for access outside of class; interprets with assigned team member as appropriate; provides interpreting services for college faculty and staff as needed and available once students have been assisted
- Assists the Director of Disability Services with selecting, evaluating and mentoring independent contracted interpreters for skill and other essential factors, including professionalism and ethical practices; maintains awareness of area contract interpreters and their availability for work
- Maintains working knowledge of national credential assessments, skill levels and certifications
- Schedules interpreters for semester assignments, special events and as substitutes
