Job Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking an energetic student to assist in sampling for aquatic nuisance species in the Atlanta‑metro region, in support of GA-DNR’s Aquatic Nuisance Species Surveillance Program. The student will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in using both active and passive sampling techniques in wadable rivers and streams.

We encourage applications from all members of the global community and individuals with a range of experiences in STEM for this position.

Responsibilities
  • Assists PI in sampling for fishes in local rivers and streams.
  • Students will be expected to enter local streams and effectively use a dip net to collect fish samples along with transects.
  • Assist in identification and measuring of sampled fishes.
  • Assist in reconnaissance of prospective sampling locations.
  • Assist in loading and unloading the field vehicle.
  • Proficient in data entry using Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to present findings during professional meetings.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Georgia Gwinnett College.
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain good academic standing for the duration of employment.
  • Must be in good conduct standing with Georgia Gwinnett College and maintain good conduct for the duration of employment.
  • Experience conducting fieldwork in a biological field.
  • Willingness to work with fish in field environments.
  • Must be willing, in some cases, to hike over rough terrain to access sampling locations and sample in strenuous conditions.
  • Ability to be highly organized, attentive to details, time management, and multi‑tasking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ​Pursuing a B.S. degree in Biology or Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Interest in the Environmental Biology, wildlife, fisheries, and the outdoors.
  • Experience in wading with waders and boots in rivers and streams.
  • Professional demeanor with excellent communication skills.
