Job SummaryThe Campus Police Lieutenant is responsible for supervising and assisting assigned staff in the performance of police functions and duties, which include administrative and investigative duties, public enforcement protection and security. The Lieutenant delegates assignments to officers and sergeants, reviews reports for results, accuracy, effectiveness, and conformance with policies. The incumbent supervises, coordinates and conducts: patrol activities, general investigations, accident investigations, special assignments and emergency responses.
This position is the senior police officer, who may work one of three possible shifts. This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) and is responsible for reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report in accordance with the Federal Clery Act and GGC policy.
- Supervises assigned personnel. Responds to assist, or direct, subordinate officers at scenes, or other significant incidents; enforces state, county, and city ordinances to effectuate arrests; prepares misdemeanor and felony cases for prosecution; collects and preserves evidence; collaborates with detectives in conducting follow-up investigations; prepares written investigation materials; responds to calls for assistance from community agencies
- Receives and reviews reports prepared by subordinate officers for accuracy and content; prepares and submits annual budget requests that support the organizational strategic and operational plans; performs, or assists in the performance of, risk assessments relating to department responsibilities; inspects buildings and grounds for crime prevention reports; prepares crime vulnerability and traffic flow assessments
- Maintains liaison with college officials, community police and fire/EMS departments to promote safety and security of the college
- Participates in the interviews of applicants for employment or assignment purposes; plans, develops and conducts officer in-service and POST certified training; trains new officers and support staff; maintains new employees performance standards in accordance with applicable departmental, State and Federal guidelines (Privacy and NCIC/GCIC Standards)
- Appears in court to testify and present evidence in criminal cases and at college to present evidence in disciplinary hearings
- Provides victims and witnesses information and assistance in accordance with laws and policies
- Reviews and provides recommendations for campus-wide crime alerts and initiates campus emergency mass notification
- Performs the duties normally associated with a Sergeant, Campus Security Officer, Patrolman, or Communications Officer (when assigned)
