Job Summary

The Campus Police Lieutenant supervises and assists assigned staff in the performance of police functions and duties, including administrative and investigative tasks, public enforcement, protection, and security. The Lieutenant delegates assignments, reviews reports for accuracy and effectiveness, and coordinates patrol activities, investigations, accident investigations, special assignments, and emergency responses. The position is the senior police officer, may work one of three possible shifts, and serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA), reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for the Annual Campus Security Report.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises assigned personnel; responds to assist, or direct, subordinate officers at scenes or significant incidents; enforces state, county, and city ordinances, prepares misdemeanor and felony cases for prosecution, collects and preserves evidence, collaborates with detectives, prepares written investigation materials, and responds to calls for assistance from community agencies.
  • Receives and reviews reports prepared by subordinate officers for accuracy and content; prepares and submits annual budget requests supporting the organizational strategic and operational plans; performs or assists with risk assessments, inspects buildings and grounds, and prepares crime vulnerability and traffic flow assessments.
  • Maintains liaison with college officials, community police, and fire/EMS departments to promote safety and security of the college.
  • Participates in the interviews of applicants; plans, develops and conducts officer in‑service and POST‑certified training; trains new officers and support staff; maintains performance standards in accordance with departmental, State and Federal guidelines.
  • Appears in court to testify and present evidence in criminal cases and at college disciplinary hearings.
  • Provides victims and witnesses information and assistance in accordance with laws and policies.
  • Reviews and provides recommendations for campus‑wide crime alerts; initiates campus emergency mass notification.
  • Performs the duties normally associated with a Sergeant, Campus Security Officer, Patrolman, or Communications Officer when assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Five years of law‑enforcement experience with a minimum of three years in a supervisory or investigative capacity.
  • Twenty‑one years of age or older.
  • Georgia POST Certified with Basic Law Enforcement Mandate and in Good Standing.
  • Maintain annual certification and state training requirements and any additional institutional requirements.
  • Pass pre‑employment testing (if applicable), criminal history check (no felony convictions or convictions of moral turpitude), background check, physical, drug test, psychological and/or polygraph exam, and credit history check.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a police supervisor or investigator.
  • POST certified instructor.
Proposed Salary

$56,800 – $71,000 annually, dependent on candidate experience and qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of community policing principles and programs.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, criminal law and/or security and criminal procedural law terminology.
  • Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures and ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations.
  • Knowledge of emergency management principles and procedures.
  • Skills in verbal and written communication with the public in routine and difficult situations (victims of crimes and witnesses).
  • Skills in basic computer use (Word, Excel, Internet).
  • Ability to physically control violent persons and exercise good judgment and self‑control in the discharge of duties on a college campus with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to qualify with an approved firearm as required by department policy and Georgia POST standards.
