Job Summary

The Mechanic diagnoses and repairs diesel tractors, trailers and other wheeled vehicles by performing the duties listed below.

Job Responsibilities
  • Examines and diagnoses vehicle problems, and repairs according to generally accepted methods.
  • Discusses extensive or difficult in‑depth repairs with the Terminal Manager and/or Supervisor.
  • Demonstrates and enforces CEMEX safety policies and regulations to all mechanics (e.g., lockout‑tagout policies, hazard assessment).
  • Ensures shop and all repairs comply with OSHA regulations.
  • Performs routine scheduled maintenance outlined on PM checklist sheets.
  • Plans all routine work procedures.
  • Raises the vehicle with a hydraulic jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical components.
  • Removes components for repair or replacement (alternators, starters, water pumps, radiators, condensers, compressors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, wheel assemblies, brakes, drive lines, gearboxes, pumps, rollers, etc.).
  • Disassembles components, inspects parts for wear, and determines cause of failure.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems and components.
  • Inspects and replaces parts such as clutches, wheel seals, brake linings, drums, bearings, and other components.
  • Overhauls and rebuilds serviceable components.
  • Travel may be required to repair company equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems and circuitry in accordance with industry standards.
  • Performs occasional cutting and welding using gas and electric welding equipment.
  • Installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wiper blades.
  • Enters work orders on the system for equipment inventory purposes.
  • Adheres to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times.
  • Wears proper safety equipment while on plant grounds.
  • Meets or exceeds company safety standards.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years of related experience, training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to understand, interpret, communicate, and execute instructions in both verbal and written form.
  • Bi‑lingual Spanish a plus.
  • Recognition of potentially hazardous situations and understanding of supervisor instructions.
  • Ability to deal with mechanical problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license (Class A or Class B CDL preferred; the ability to obtain within 180 days). Must have a driving record that meets company requirements.
  • Forklift certification or willingness to obtain.
  • TWIC preferred or willingness to obtain.
Working Conditions
  • Job involves sitting most of the time, with walking or standing for brief periods.
Physical Requirements
  • Walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 20 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly, to move objects.
  • Requires regular talking and hearing for communication.
