Job Summary
This position is responsible for participating in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the electrical distribution system.
Essential Functions- Constructs and maintains energized overhead and underground utility lines.
- Switches overhead and underground lines.
- Understands different voltages for banks and businesses.
- Operates aerial equipment, trencher, crane, backhoe, and other equipment in the installation and repair of electrical utility infrastructure.
- Operates line trucks and bucket trucks.
- Works on energize primary voltage in rubber gloves following proper safety procedures.
- Trims trees limbs to maintain line clearance for all city-owned transmission and distribution lines and to assist with other city operations.
- Trains and directs the work of assigned personnel; ensures compliance with safety standards.
- Performs electrical building code inspections.
- Secures new wires and insulators to adjoining sections of lines.
- Responds to customer service calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, etc.
- Detaches existing wires and transfers new wires to utility poles in projects involving system upgrades.
- Sets residential single-phase and commercial poly-phase meters.
- Installs and maintains streetlights, including residential and commercial security lights.
- Identifies location of circuits and cut-out fuses.
- Locates underground utility lines.
- Climbs utility poles as required.
- Fills out work orders and use GIS maps.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs related duties.
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of an electric utility system.
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations.
- Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Skills in utilizing specialized tools and equipment related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of electric services.
- Skills in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
- Skills in reading and interpreting maps and drawings.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
- The Electric Director or Assistant Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
- Guidelines include city ordinances, state law, federal regulations, the APPA safety book, the National Electric Code, and the National Electric Safety Code. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
- The work consists of varied technical duties. The variety of work assignments, dangerous field conditions, and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of the electrical utility system. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective delivery of electric services to customers.
- Contacts are typically with coworkers, vendors, consultants, contractors, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Some of the work is performed on utility poles, in elevated buckets, and in the presence of electrified lines. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

- This position may have functional supervision over assigned personnel.
- High school education.
- One to three years of experience or service.
- Residency within 25 miles of office is required.
- Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain the appropriate state certification for the type of inspection(s) conducted.
