Performs a variety of working level firefighting duties related to protecting life and property of Layton City residents and the general public. May be required to drive and operate all fire department apparatus. Performs advanced or basic life support to patients according to protocols and level of certification.
Essential Functions- Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations.
- Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire.
- Responds to emergency medical incidents; treats and renders appropriate care for patients according to protocol; makes appropriate transport decisions and safely transports all patients.
- Performs salvage operations; inspects and cleans equipment and apparatus after fires.
- Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects; performs routine maintenance and keeps records.
- Keeps station, equipment and grounds clean and orderly.
- Participates in training activities and instruction sessions; acquires knowledge of city streets, buildings, water supply, hazards.
- Performs public information or education tasks; enters records into management systems.
- Works safely, reports unsafe conditions, and adheres to safety policies.
- Responds to specialized emergencies (hazardous materials, confined space, extrication, technical rescues).
- Assists victims and relatives of traumatic events; conducts other duties as assigned.
- Participates in Physical Fitness program and meets department requirements.
- Subject to emergency callback and/or mandatory return to duty.
Graduation from high school, or equivalent.
Firefighter I
- Must possess a valid Driver's License. Ability to obtain a State of Utah driver's license within 30 days of hire.
- Certified as a State of Utah EMT-Basic, EMT-Advanced or Paramedic. Nationally Registered EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic (eligible for reciprocity in Utah) is also accepted.
- Successfully complete the Layton City Fire Department recruit academy and pass State of Utah Firefighter I, II, and Haz-Mat tests within 12 months of hire.
- Certified as NWCG Firefighter II or Utah State Wildland Firefighter I within 12 months of hire.
- Certified as Utah EMT-Advanced or Paramedic within 12 months of hire is REQUIRED.
- Firefighter II – Meet all Firefighter I requirements and: one (1) year as a Layton City Firefighter or 1–2 years as a lateral hire with experience at a comparable department.
- Firefighter III – Meet all Firefighter II requirements and: minimum of two (2) years as a Layton City Firefighter II or at least three (3) years as a lateral hire with experience at a comparable department.
