Job Summary

The Physician Assistant will provide comprehensive medical care in a pain management setting, performing physical exams, ordering and interpreting tests, prescribing medications, and treating illnesses. The PA will also counsel patients and families, document care, and collaborate closely with physicians.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct physical exams, assess health status, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and treat illnesses including providing injections and suturing wounds.
  • Consult with physicians as needed and refer patients for more complicated cases or those outside the PA’s scope of practice.
  • Monitor patient therapies, provide continuity of care, and document all patient information in the medical record.
  • Triage patient calls and telephone consultations, evaluate patient problems, and respond to emergencies, including CPR.
  • Counsel patients and families on preventive health care and education regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Obtain complete medical histories and physical data, review patient records, and determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Dictate histories and physicals for all hospitalized admissions.
  • Perform independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations.
  • Write and refill prescriptions (subject to state laws and scope of practice).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Nurse Practitioner: BSN required, MSN preferred; completion of advanced practitioner training and certification from an approved nurse practitioner program.
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of an accredited physician assistant program.
  • Minimum four years of health‑care experience prior to applying to a PA program, plus one year of experience as a PA, preferably in a clinic setting.
Experience
  • Nurse Practitioner: Minimum three years of professional nursing experience in a clinic setting, plus two years of nurse practitioner experience.
  • Physician Assistant: Minimum four years of health‑care experience prior to applying to a PA program, plus one year of experience as a PA, preferably in a clinic setting.
Other Requirements
  • Nurse Practitioner: Current state registered nurse license; current license as an advanced registered nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority.
  • Physician Assistant: National certification from the National Commission on Certification of PA; state PA license also required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
Knowledge
  • Medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants; anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis.
  • Patient assessment techniques, including taking medical histories, performing physicals, and evaluating health status.
  • Diagnosing and treating medical problems; developing care plans.
  • Documentation in medical records with confidentiality.
Skills
  • Gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data.
  • Accurate evaluation of patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.
  • Developing and revising patient care plans based on patient status.
Abilities
  • Make responsible decisions within scope of PA practice.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff in a user‑friendly manner.
  • Demonstrate eye–hand coordination, full range of motion, and manual dexterity.
Equipment Operated
  • Medical instruments required for physical exams and minor surgery, plus computer hardware/software.
Work Environment
  • Medical office and exam room settings; frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, and other conditions common to a clinic.
  • Frequent contact with a variety of people.
Mental/Physical Requirements
  • Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • May be required to help transfer patients.
  • High level of responsibility and heavy workload can generate stress.
