- Understanding of all key components of department operations (managing people, merchandising, computer‑assisted ordering, inventory management, shrink control, customer service, labor scheduling, expense control, etc.).
- Working knowledge of produce preparation and general store operations.
- Strong communication skills with employees, customers, and supervision, constant alertness to changing priorities, and the ability to react quickly.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to make intelligent decisions quickly.
- Capable of handling stressful situations calmly and tactfully, leaving a positive impression on associates and customers.
- Possess skills for effective production, merchandising, and customer service related to the sale of merchandise.
- Produce work experience or similar experience in food preparation.
- Past work record reflects dependability and integrity.
- Develop maximum customer relations by produce department personnel through personal example of friendliness and courtesy and implementation of all company policies.
- Alert and assist in store security; handle customer complaints.
- Make recommendations regarding hiring, firing, disciplining, demoting, transferring, and evaluating all produce department personnel.
- Proper indoctrination of all department employees; ensure they can read scales and prices correctly.
- Provide adequate knowledge and training of price marking, ensuring proper emphasis on customer courtesy and productivity.
- Supervise all aspects of salad bar operations.
- Discuss with store manager the most efficient and practical working schedules for both full‑time and part‑time employees to maximize efficiency.
- Maintain a personable, clean and neat appearance of departmental people, with proper uniforming and identification.
- Maintain good communication with all store personnel.
- Plan, organize, direct, and control the activities of the produce department; may take charge of the store operation in the absence of the store manager.
