The Part-Time Recreation Specialist supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreational programs, community events, and public engagement initiatives for the City of League City. The position provides front-line interaction with residents, supports logistics and operational needs, and assists staff in ensuring safe, inclusive, and high-quality recreational experiences.
This role includes two service divisions, Special Events and Adaptive Recreation, each requiring specialized skills to meet community needs.
Special Events Recreation SpecialistThis subcategory focuses on supporting City-wide festivals, holiday celebrations, pop-up events, recreational tournaments, and community engagement programs. Responsibilities include event setup and teardown, vendor and volunteer support, participant assistance, crowd‑flow facilitation, and helping ensure a safe, welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
Adaptive Recreation SpecialistThis subcategory focuses on programs designed for individuals with disabilities or differing abilities. Responsibilities include assisting with inclusive programming, making activity modifications, providing participant support, helping ensure safety and accessibility, and fostering an environment of respect, empowerment, and equal participation.
Due to the nature of these responsibilities, this role is subject to random drug screening under the City's safety-sensitive positions policy. Includes both general duties and subcategory-specific activities as assigned.
Job Responsibilities- Creates, implements, and evaluates recreation programs and activities with a primary focus on adaptive programming or special events; researches and recommends program offerings; develops activity timelines; and schedules registration dates and related meetings.
- Maintain supply inventories, prepare materials, and report equipment or facility concerns.
- Enters and maintains program information in recreation management software for online and in‑house registration; manages waitlists; generates reports; and ensures accurate record‑keeping.
- Support volunteers, vendors, contract instructors, and community partners during events.
- Serves as point of contact for recreation staff and programs; trains and oversees seasonal staff; and serves as the point of contact for on‑site and off‑site facilities.
- Addresses customer complaints, facility concerns, and custodial or maintenance needs; oversees financial transactions at the front desk; and reconciles income reports at the end of each shift when serving as point of contact.
- Oversees scheduling of programs and rentals across multiple parks and facilities during point‑of‑contact shifts.
- Assists in the setup, breakdown, cleaning, and safe operation of program areas, facilities, and event spaces.
- Supports participant check‑in, registration processes, program tracking, and customer service duties.
- Monitors participants to ensure safety, rule compliance, and positive engagement.
- Upholds City policies, safety guidelines, customer service standards, and departmental procedures.
- Assists with marketing and promotional activities, including distributing flyers, updating bulletin boards, and supporting social media content.
- Participates in departmental meetings, staff training, and community engagement efforts as needed.
- Provides support for other recreation programs, events, or facilities during peak periods, staffing shortages, or special activities.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or two years of college in Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies or a related field.
- At least three to five years of parks recreation experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- For Adaptive Recreation: A minimum of one year of experience working directly with individuals with disabilities or in adaptive recreation, education, or similar programs.
