About us:

Every refrigerated truck and trailer moving goods across the country has relied on diesel for decades. It's polluting, expensive, and the technology hasn't changed. Two companies have dominated the market, selling the same legacy technology with minor updates.

Sunswap makes the electric refrigeration that's replacing it - zero emissions, lower operating costs, built from the ground up for how fleets actually operate.

We've gone from founding to manufacturing at scale globally in just six years. We built our own production facility in Surrey. We are trusted by major brands like Tesco, Ocado, Birds Eye, and Happy Eggs every single day. With units operating across the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Chile, and Australia.

We've been named Sunday Times Best Place to Work 2024 and 2025. We've won awards for innovation, technology, and marketing excellence. We've secured backing from BGF, Barclays, and Clean Growth Fund. We've got the customers, the traction, and the momentum.

Now we're taking this British-engineered product global. Scaling manufacturing. Opening new markets. Building the team that will make legacy polluting technology obsolete across the world.

If you want to be part of a company that's setting new standards for the industry and scaling internationally, this is it.

Job Overview:

The Senior Electrical Systems Engineer will take an important technical position within Sunswap's Electrical Systems team, accountable for designing, developing and delivering the electrical systems in Sunswap's product. You will own the electrical system/subsystem design end‑to‑end, from concept through to series production, and act as the senior technical authority on electrical standards, safety and design quality.

As part of your role, you'll generate and release electrical schematics, define and maintain electrical design standards, and lead investigation and resolution of electrical design and supply issues (including 8D and Containment activity). You'll also lead hazard analysis and safety‑case activity for the electrical system, and provide technical guidance to other engineers, while remaining hands‑on with the practical, day‑to‑day electrical engineering work.

Key responsibilities:
  • Own the design, development and delivery of low-voltage DC and mains AC electrical systems across the full product lifecycle, from concept through to series production.
  • Generate, check and release high-quality electrical schematics through concept and production.
  • Define, maintain and continuously improve electrical design standards and best practice across the team.
  • Lead component selection and sourcing decisions for electrical systems, working closely with supply chain and suppliers.
  • Lead investigation and resolution of electrical design and supply issues, including 8D problem solving, ICA raising/review/approval, and root cause analysis.
  • Lead hazard analysis for electrical systems, including contributing to and maintaining the Operational Mode Risk Assessment (OMRA), to identify failure modes and derive mitigations and safety requirements.
  • Ensure electrical designs are developed in line with relevant electrical and functional safety standards, and support demonstration of compliance (e.g. against the Machinery Directive and associated harmonised standards).
  • Drive cost-down and optimisation initiatives across the Sunswap electrical system.
  • Support the qualification of electrical designs through testing and documentation, including EMC and environmental compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance and informal mentorship to other engineers on electrical system and harness design.
  • Generate requirements derived from relevant electrical standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, software, quality, supply chain) to ensure successful integration of electrical systems…
