Low Incidence (Structured Learning) Special Education Teacher - 2026/27 School Year
Job Description
Purpose: The Low Incidence (Structured Learning) Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with low-incidence disabilities, including but not limited to autism, intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and severe physical impairments. The teacher designs and implements individualized education programs (IEPs) that address each student's unique academic, social, behavioral, and developmental needs. This role involves working closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure students receive the appropriate support and services to succeed in their least restrictive environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education
  • Valid Kansas Teaching License in Special Education
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the District Office (after an employment offer is made)
  • Strong knowledge of IEP development, data collection, and progress monitoring
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Patience, compassion, and the ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in the field of education
  • Three-plus years of certified teaching experience
  • Experience working with students who have severe cognitive and physical disabilities
  • Proficiency with behavior management strategies
  • Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and other assistive technologies
  • Experience with data collection and using progress monitoring tools to drive instructional decisions
Essential Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily:
  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with low-incidence disabilities in collaboration with parents, teachers, and support staff
  • Adapt and modify instructional materials and strategies to meet each student's specific needs, ensuring alignment with district and state standards
  • Provide direct instruction in core academic subjects, communication skills, social skills, life skills, and adaptive behavior
  • Utilize specialized equipment, assistive technology, and alternative communication methods (e.g., AAC devices, sign language) to support student learning and participation
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and make data-driven decisions for instructional adjustments
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and other support staff to promote inclusion and facilitate participation in the general education setting when appropriate
  • Implement behavior support plans (BIPs) and other behavioral interventions to address students’ social and emotional needs
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation related to student progress, IEP goals, and compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., IDEA, Section 504)
  • Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and parent-teacher conferences, providing updates on student progress and collaborating on educational goals
  • Communicate and consult with parents/guardians on an ongoing basis, offering support and resources to promote student success at school and home
  • Supervise and train paraprofessionals, ensuring they are equipped to assist students in achieving their IEP goals
  • Ensure that all safety and health protocols are followed, including feeding, toileting, and transferring students with physical disabilities
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in special education, assistive technology, and behavioral intervention strategies
  • Adheres strictly to professional ethics
  • Prepares completely and adequately to carry out their responsibilities for all students within their classroom
