General PurposeUnder general supervision, performs semi‑skilled tasks involving sidewalk/curb inspections and maintenance and repair of sidewalks and curbs throughout the City.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform concrete work including demolition, forming and finishing of sidewalks and curbs.
- Operate trucks and construction power equipment such as skid steer, loader, backhoe, dump truck, snow plows, air compressor, pneumatic hammers, portable electrical generator.
- Perform preventative maintenance and inspection of all assigned equipment; troubleshoot equipment malfunction and repair; report defects or advanced repair needs to supervisor immediately.
- Maintain accountability and control of all assigned equipment.
- Set up and maintain traffic control at work sites in accordance with established work zone control safety standards.
- Assist with snow and ice control and storm damage recovery duties when needed.
- Work independently and problem‑solve autonomously.
- Maintain and monitor a safety culture in accordance with City policy; oversee safety of assigned operations by instructing individuals in proper safety procedures and reporting violations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and fellow employees.
- Serve as a member of various employee committees as assigned.
- Assist other Public Works divisions with various job duties when needed.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in concrete finishing work.
- Valid driver’s license at time of application and maintain for duration of employment.
- Meet insurability standards under fleet insurance policy.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of concrete work techniques, construction practices and proper use of tools and equipment.
- Working knowledge of light to heavy equipment operating principles.
- Working knowledge of hazard and safety precautions common to light to heavy equipment operations.
- Working knowledge of materials and tools used in concrete work.
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety Procedures in accordance with the Federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), State and City requirements.
- Skill in safe operation and maintenance of listed equipment and tools.
- Ability to work with masonry and concrete repair procedures and techniques; estimate quantities of material; read and comprehend construction drawings.
- Ability to withstand prolonged exposure to variable weather conditions; perform manual tasks involving physical strength (lifting up to 80 pounds) and endurance under variable weather conditions ranging from extreme cold to extreme heat.
- Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and oral instructions; effectively communicate with supervisor and contractors; develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, department personnel and other City employees.
