Purpose of the Role

BBC Look North in Yorkshire is looking for a talented and versatile multi-platform journalist to work in our busy TV, online, audio and social newsroom in Leeds. You’ll be an experienced journalist who can get to the heart of the issues affecting people living in Yorkshire, with an understanding of our underserved and opportunity audience and editorial motivations. You’ll be part of a brilliant team producing the best stories across the whole patch.

You will cover the full range of news stories from across the county for online, radio, social media and TV. We want you to help us create brilliant news content and memorable moments for our breakfast, lunch and flagship 1830 programmes. You will be responsible for researching stories, finding guests, writing news items and editing TV content.

The role is based at BBC Yorkshire in Leeds and is predominantly office based production role.

Your

Key Responsibilities And Impact
  • Contributing original ideas and treatments for stories
  • Researching news stories, including finding case studies and guests for interviews and filming
  • Briefing presenters and reporters on stories
  • Deliver tight, well-written copy that is accurate, impartial, and shows excellent editorial judgment for TV, online and radio
  • Edit TV content quickly and efficiently to a high journalistic and technical standard.
  • Work as an integral part of the BBC Yorkshire news team, working alongside producers, correspondents and reporters in the region, as well as the wider BBC.
Your Skills and Experience
  • You’ll be an experienced multi-media journalist, comfortable writing and producing content for TV, online and radio.
Essential Criteria
  • Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques.
  • Ability to write news stories creatively and accurately in an engaging manner for mulit-platform audiences to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and a tenacious attitude to enable effective story research, setting up case studies, interviews and filming.
  • Sound editorial judgment and a good understanding of the diverse communities and news agenda within the Yorkshire region
  • Ability to work well across the newsroom, in a team and under own initiative
Desired But Not Required
  • Optimo trained for online writing.
  • Mojo trained.
  • Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
