Clinical Fellowship in Transplant Hepatology – September 2026

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellowship available from September 2026 for 12 months (subject to satisfactory progression) in the Department of Hepatology at St James's University Hospital, Leeds.

This is an exciting opportunity to train in one of the leading UK Hepatology centres and contribute to the Leeds Liver Unit's international reputation for transplantation.

The successful candidate will gain experience in all aspects of Hepatology including the assessment of patients with acute and sub‑acute liver failure, assessment of patients for treatments such as liver transplantation and TIPSS, patients with a wide variety of complex general Hepatological conditions and with viral hepatitis. The post is purely clinical; the fellow will join the out‑of‑hours rota and have the opportunity to undertake audit and contribute to ongoing projects in the department.

The Department is affiliated to the University of Leeds with the MRC funded Centre for Bioinformatics, the Leeds Institute of Data Analysis and the NIHR funded Diagnostic Evaluation Co‑operative.

• Contribute to the out‑of‑hours rota (1 in 9 resident) on a registrar‑level basis.
• Deliver inpatient care for Liver Transplant and Hepatology patients and participate in the medical out‑of‑hours rota.
• Participate in specialty clinics such as viral hepatitis, immune hepatology, primary liver cancer and portal hypertension.
• Contribute to the care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit post‑liver transplant or with acute liver failure.
• Assist with the expanding Community Hepatology service.
• Engage in weekly radiology meetings, pathology case conferences, transplant MDT meetings and weekly training sessions.

• Primary medical qualification with an equivalent recognised qualification acceptable.
• Full Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council.
• Certificate in Advanced Life Support from the UK Resuscitation Council or equivalent; preparation to undertake training prior to start.
• Full MRCP(UK) qualification.
• Minimum 12 months experience in Hepatology (post‑CCT or trainee seeking Level 3 experience).

• Eligible for full registration with the GMC and hold a current Licence to Practice at the intended start date.
• Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for effective communication with patients and colleagues.
• Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication and capacity to adapt language as appropriate; build rapport, listen, persuade, negotiate and maintain a professional telephone manner.

• Apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems; prioritise clinical need and maximise safety while minimising risk.
• Initial management of acutely ill patients, logical/lateral thinking for problem solving, decision making and analytical approach.
• Operate under pressure, demonstrate initiative and resilience, monitor developing situations and anticipate issues.
• Show respect for all, treat patients as people, manage and prioritise time and information.
• Ask for help when needed and take responsibility for own actions.
• Awareness of ethical principles, safety, confidentiality and consent.
• Interest in and understanding of the specialty, commitment to personal and professional development.
• Attendance at organised teaching and training programmes and self‑reflective practice.

• Aptitude for practical skills, e.g. manual dexterity.
• Completion of relevant skills courses.
• Receiving clinical information from telephone referral services.
• Interest and experience in teaching, feedback for teaching and instructor status or recommendation in advanced life support courses.
