Main duties of the job

The post is full time and the appointee will be expected to take part in the Resident out of hours rota(1:10 rolling patternincluding night shifts). The majority of the out of hours involves general

Paediatric surgery, Neonatal surgery and Trauma. The candidate will thereforebe expected to have competencies in the management of the sick child and arange of acute and elective work preferably with some training or experience in Paediatric Surgery. Equivalent generic experience and competencies through paediatricsor emergency medicine for example will also be considered favourably.

About us

The Trust Grade Dr in Paediatric Surgery is based at the Leeds General Infirmary inWest Yorkshire. This role is suitable for applicants who have experience inpaediatrics and neonatology, or those with a desire to be involved in paediatric and neonatal surgery in the future. It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital which provides manyspecialist services and for anyone wishing gain experience in varioussub-specialties of paediatric surgery.

The department provides exposure to all surgical aspects of children ranging from 016 years. This includes general surgery of childhood as well as highlyspecialised services for thoracic/upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery,hepatobiliary surgery, oncology surgery, neonatal surgery and urology. Thereare 17 consultants within the department providing elective specialty work and consultants participate in acute on call providing separate general surgery,

The Doctor will support in a rolling 1:10 rota and be involved in covering all aspects of inpatient care including on-call, ward cover and night shifts.

During other duty periods, the post holder will be involved in other aspects ofthe paediatric surgical service, including attending outpatient clinics, andtheatres. They will also have exposure to other activities within the department including opportunities for quality improvement, audit and contributions to clinical governance work. We would encourage post holders topursue their clinical interests using connections within the hospital, to beable to help them to achieve their next steps for career progression.

Specification Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Basic/intermediate paediatric life support (will be delivered on enrolment)
  • MRCS (partial or complete) or equivalent particularly MRCPCH
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK. Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient.
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice
Experience
  • 12 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice; including:

  • protect and promote the health of patients and of the public
