We are looking to recruit a higher specialist paediatric trainee to join the team from March 2026 for a period of 6 months with the opportunity to extend further. On call duties will be on the general paediatric HST rota. This is a busy tertiary service for paediatric nephrology covering a catchment population of over 1 million children from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
The doctor in training would gain experience in all areas of the Paediatric Nephrology Speciality Curriculum including management of Acute Kidney Injury (peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis & continuous venous haemodialysis/filtration) and chronic kidney disease (pre-dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis & transplantation – ≈12 paediatric transplants/yr). General paediatric renal services include the investigation and management of children with nephrotic/nephritic syndrome, urinary tract infection and congenital anomalies of the urinary tract, renovascular disease / hypertension, renal tubular & metabolic disorders & renal stone disease.
duties of the job
The daytime role will be primarily based on the paediatric Nephrology ward (L50). The post holder will be involved in the day‑to‑day management of inpatients and take part in outpatient clinics. The post‑holder will have the opportunity to participate in medical audit and local/multi‑centre research projects. Out‑of‑hours commitments include covering the general paediatric wards and working on the acute Children's assessment and treatment (CAT) unit which receives referrals from GPs, the Paediatric Emergency department and community nurses/midwives.
The registrar will outline the management plan and oversee patient flow. The post holder will also assist in preparing discharge letters, initiation/change of treatment and discussions with relatives.

- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practice from, the GMC at intended start date

- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent by intended start date

- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
- MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
- Evidence of at least 36 months experience in Paediatric Medicine Part 2 written MRCPCH and considering applying for a clinical or equivalent post‑graduation degree
- Evidence of paediatric training to ST3 competencies or above
- Previous experience working at a Registrar level
- Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
- Ability to prioritise clinical need
- Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
- Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient
- Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
