Information About the Department

The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team involved in running a regional Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition service and provide tertiary care to North and West Yorkshire.

The department provides expertise in the management of Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) (over 300 patients), intestinal failure (IF) (being one of the first established IF centres in the country, looking after home PN patients and patients started on Teduglutide), enteral tube fed patients (around 2000 patients), chronic constipation and dysmotility, functional GI disorders, eosinophilic GI disorders and GI problems in children with neurodisability.

We provide onsite GI consultant assessments for a broad range of paediatric subspecialties (Hepatology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Neonatology, Paediatric Surgery, Oncology, PICU etc.).

The ward has 16 beds shared between GI and general paediatrics. There are subspecialty clinics in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, coeliac disease, dysmotility, general gastroenterology and transition clinics for IBD and IF. There are weekly IBD, IF, gastro-surgical and radiology MDTs and fortnightly a histology MDT.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will be involved in the day‑to‑day management of inpatients, review of day‑case patients and attend outpatients clinics. They will have responsibilities along with the other junior doctors in organising the weekly multidisciplinary meetings and present cases. There will be opportunities to further their training in practical procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy. The weekly ward timetable includes close supervision by consultants and several opportunities for clinical teaching.

The post holder would be expected to participate in medical audit and research projects.

The post holder will be expected to do on calls in general paediatrics or specialties, so around 60‑65% of the time will be within the Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition speciality.

Level of responsibility:
The post holder will be always under consultant supervision.

Teaching and Research / Study and Training:
Study leave is available as provided for under the Terms and Conditions of Service and Hospital Medical and Dental Staff. There will be formal teaching (once weekly within the department by MDT members) and attendance at post‑graduate educational meetings is encouraged. There will be access to the internet for literature searches at ward level. Extensive research facilities exist at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and research will be actively encouraged within the department.

This department also offers extensive diagnostic investigations for patients, including endoscopy, colonoscopy and pH studies.
