This post will deliver 10PAs as part of the Spinal Surgery team with a full time commitment to complex spinal surgery. Acute responsibilities will include taking part in a 1:12 spinal only on-call rota. The elective practice will focus on complex spinal surgery only. Candidates are expected to have experience of all facets of spinal surgery and have undertaken dedicated post CCT training in the UK in complex spinal surgery.
There will be opportunities to contribute to teaching and research. The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary.
To deliver care to patients who require spinal surgical interventions at the LGI site:
Out-patient clinics Supervision of patients Care of in-patients on a Spinal Surgery rota with an on call frequency of 1:12. Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings. To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the spinal team and across the spinal surgery service. To work with colleagues in Spinal surgery to deliver the acute spinal on call (on the Spinal rota with an on-call frequency of 1 in 12).
This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours. To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Spinal surgery service. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department.

Why you should join our TeamThe Spinal Unit is supported by four senior interface spinal fellows and three junior spinal fellows plus 4 T& O registrars and 8 FY1 doctors. There are 9 StRs within neurosurgery and 11 SHO grade staff. These rotate through the spinal service during their training. The wards are also supported by Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs). There are 9 Neurosurgical consultants who also have an elective spinal surgery practice alongside their neurosurgical practice.
Four adult Clinical Nurse Specialists bridge the ward discharges and post-op follow-up care in addition to supplying patient information/support and help during in-patient stay for all adult spinal admissions. There is a paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist who bridges the ward discharges and post-op follow-up care in addition to supplying patient information/support and help during in-patient stay for all paediatric spinal admissions.
you will bring to the role Requirements of the post General Training and Qualifications
The appointee must hold accreditation in FRCS (Tr & Orth) or FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.
ExperienceThe appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of spinal surgery and appropriate experience in complex spinal surgery. The postholder will deliver the regional on-call Spinal surgery service. The postholder will be expected to deliver adult Spinal surgery work both complex and non-complex.

Clinical AuditThe appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:
- Mortality and morbidity meetings
- Clinical audit programmes
- Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.
This is to be included in allocated time in the individual's job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trust's clinical audit policy).
