Job Description & How to Apply Below

A distinguished co-educational independent school in Staffordshire is seeking an ambitious and experienced Head of Geography to lead its thriving Humanities faculty. The school is widely recognised for its academic outcomes, breadth of co-curricular provision and strong pastoral culture, educating pupils from preparatory level through to Sixth Form.

Geography is a popular and high-performing subject within the school, with strong GCSE and A-Level uptake and consistent progression to competitive university courses including environmental science, international development and urban planning. This appointment represents an exciting opportunity to shape the strategic direction of the department while teaching motivated, intellectually curious pupils.

The Role

As Head of Geography, you will provide academic and strategic leadership across KS3–KS5. You will oversee curriculum design, assessment strategy, enrichment provision and staff development within the department.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and developing a cohesive Geography team
  • Teaching across GCSE and A-Level with a focus on academic excellence
  • Designing a knowledge-rich, well-sequenced curriculum
  • Monitoring student progress and driving strong examination outcomes
  • Expanding fieldwork provision and global enrichment opportunities
  • Contributing to whole-school academic strategy

This is a hands-on leadership role, combining high-quality classroom teaching with department development.

The Department

Geography sits within a strong Humanities faculty alongside History and Politics. The department benefits from dedicated classrooms, access to digital mapping resources and structured fieldwork planning embedded into the curriculum.

  • Consistently strong A-Level results
  • High participation in national competitions and essay prizes
  • Annual residential field trips and overseas study visits
  • A culture of academic discussion and independent research

There is scope to further develop cross-curricular links with Science and Economics, particularly around sustainability and global development themes.

The School

Set within impressive grounds in Staffordshire, the school blends historic buildings with modern teaching spaces. Pupils are articulate, respectful and ambitious, creating a calm and intellectually engaging classroom atmosphere.

Pastoral systems are strong, supported by a house structure and tutor programme that prioritises student wellbeing and personal development. Staff are encouraged to contribute to wider school life through societies, academic clubs and boarding activities where relevant.

Facilities include:

  • Modernised teaching suites within the Humanities corridor
  • A central library and Sixth Form study centre
  • Outdoor learning spaces used for environmental studies
  • Extensive extracurricular provision
Who We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold QTS or equivalent teaching qualification
  • Demonstrate strong academic credentials in Geography
  • Have experience teaching to A-Level standard
  • Show leadership capability or existing middle leadership experience
  • Be committed to scholarship, enrichment and curriculum innovation

Experience in independent education is desirable but not essential for a strong candidate with clear leadership potential.

What’s On Offer
  • Competitive independent school salary package
  • Small class sizes and motivated learners
  • Leadership responsibility within a respected academic environment
  • Free on-site parking and term-time meals
  • Strong professional development and leadership pathways

This is a significant opportunity for a Geography specialist ready to lead within a prestigious independent school community.
