We are working with a specialist Alternative Provision in Leeds to recruit a dedicated Behaviour & Learning Mentor to support students who require additional guidance, structure and encouragement to succeed in education.

This is a highly rewarding role for someone who thrives on building positive relationships and supporting young people who may have experienced significant barriers to learning.

Many of the learners have SEND, SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, emotionally based school avoidance or have become disengaged from mainstream education. We are looking for a resilient, consistent and compassionate individual who can help students develop confidence, improve behaviour and re‑engage with learning.

The Role

As a Behaviour & Learning Mentor, you will work closely with students both inside and outside the classroom, providing support, guidance and positive challenge.

You will play a key role in helping learners regulate emotions, develop coping strategies, improve attendance and engagement, and achieve positive outcomes.

This is not a traditional classroom support role. We are looking for someone who can build strong relationships, provide stability, and become a trusted adult in a young person’s educational journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build positive and professional relationships with students.
  • Support learners with SEMH, SEND and behavioural needs.
  • Deliver targeted interventions and mentoring sessions.
  • Promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning.
  • Support students during periods of dysregulation and emotional distress.
  • Work alongside teachers to create a calm and purposeful learning environment.
  • Encourage attendance, participation and personal development.
  • Act as a positive role model and mentor.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers and external agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of interventions and student progress.
  • Contribute to safeguarding and student wellbeing at all times.
The Ideal Candidate Essential
  • Experience working with young people in education, youth work, coaching, mentoring, care or support settings.
  • Strong behaviour management and de‑escalation skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships quickly.
  • Calm, resilient and emotionally intelligent approach.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries whilst developing trust.
  • Passion for helping young people overcome barriers and achieve success.
Desirable
  • Experience with in Alternative Provision, PRU, SEMH or SEND settings.
  • Background in youth work, sports coaching, behaviour support or pastoral support.
  • Training in Team Teach, MAPA, restorative practice or similar approaches.
  • Understanding of trauma‑informed practice.
  • Experience supporting learners with EHCPs.
