Graduate Science Learning Mentor – Leeds Secondary Schools

Full-Time | Term-Time Only | September 2026 Start | Earn up to £560 per week

Thinking about a PGCE? Get the classroom experience that makes your application stand out.

Before you commit to teacher training, spending a year working directly in a school is one of the most valuable things you can do — for your application, your confidence, and your certainty that teaching is the right path. This role puts you inside science departments, working daily with students and experienced teachers, giving you real, credible school experience to talk about at interview.

The Role

As a Graduate Science Learning Mentor, you'll work across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to support GCSE and A-Level students who need a little extra help. You'll run small group interventions, deliver one-to-one mentoring, assist with practical lab work, and help students sharpen their exam technique and scientific thinking.

This isn't a passive role — you'll be an active, valued member of the science department from day one.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Delivering targeted support across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
  • Running small group and one-to-one sessions for GCSE and A-Level students
  • Supporting practical experiments and laboratory work
  • Helping students with revision strategies and exam preparation
  • Developing students' scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Collaborating closely with qualified science teachers to improve student outcomes
What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • A 2:1 or above in a Science degree (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or related)
  • Solid subject knowledge across all three sciences
  • Strong communication skills and a genuine enthusiasm for working with young people
  • Motivation to pursue a career in science education

Desirable:

  • Previous tutoring, mentoring, or classroom experience
  • Familiarity with GCSE science curriculum
Why This Role?
  • Build your PGCE application — gain meaningful, school-based experience that teacher training providers look for
  • Competitive pay — up to £560 per week, term-time only
  • Learn from professionals — work alongside experienced science educators every day
  • Make a real difference — support students at crucial points in their academic journey
