Before committing to teacher training, there is no better way to gain meaningful classroom experience than by spending a year working directly in a school. As a Graduate English Learning Mentor
, you will develop the skills, confidence, and experience that make teacher training applications stand out while making a genuine difference to students' academic progress.

Working within successful secondary schools across Leeds, you will become an integral member of the English department, supporting students while learning from experienced educators every day.

As a Graduate English Learning Mentor, you will support GCSE and A-Level students in developing their literacy, analytical thinking, and communication skills. Through targeted interventions, small-group sessions, and one-to-one mentoring, you will play a key role in helping students reach their academic potential.

This is a hands‑on role offering genuine responsibility and an excellent foundation for a future career in education.

• Deliver targeted support in English Language and English Literature
• Lead small-group intervention sessions and provide one-to-one mentoring
• Support students with essay writing, reading comprehension, and textual analysis
• Help students develop effective revision strategies and examination techniques
• Build confidence in written and spoken communication
• Work collaboratively with English teachers to improve student outcomes
• Foster positive relationships that encourage engagement and academic success

• A 2:1 degree or above in English, English Literature, English Language, or a related subject (e.g. Journalism, Creative Writing, Linguistics)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• The ability to explain complex ideas clearly and effectively
• A genuine passion for education and supporting young people
• An interest in pursuing a career in teaching

• Previous tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or classroom experience
• Familiarity with GCSE and A-Level English curricula
• Experience working with young people in any capacity
