Our client, a leader in the energy and renewables sectors, is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join their hydrogen division. This role involves leading process engineering activities across the full asset lifecycle of hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing plants. The ideal candidate will bring significant experience in process design, safety compliance, and optimisation within high-hazard environments, supporting the development and safe operation of cutting-edge hydrogen facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead process design activities for hydrogen production, purification, storage, compression, and dispensing systems.
Ensure compliance with safety standards including DSEAR, IEC/BS EN 60079, and UK regulations (PSSR, COMAH).
Develop and review process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, relief system sizing, and operational philosophies.
Chair safety reviews such as HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA, defining critical safety functions.
Support commissioning, start-up, and operational troubleshooting to optimise plant performance.
Oversee process safety management, hazard identification, and risk mitigation strategies.
Contribute to asset integrity initiatives through lifecycle planning and reliability improvements.
Manage technical change processes, ensuring hazards are evaluated and documentation is maintained.

Job Requirements:

Experience in process engineering within hydrogen, chemical, or energy industries.
Understanding of hydrogen safety properties and hazards, aligned with ISO/TR 15916 standards.
Proficiency in process modelling tools such as Aspen HYSYS, Uni Sim, or gPROMS.
Strong knowledge of pressure systems, safety standards, and regulatory compliance (PSSR, COMAH).
Experience in delivering process designs through FEED, detailed design, and commissioning phases.
Ability to lead hazard studies and safety reviews confidently.
Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
Chartered Engineer status or working towards it (IChemE preferred). A degree in Chemical or Process Engineering is essential.

Knowledge,

Skills & Experience:

Understanding of hydrogen properties, hazards, and safety requirements.
Strong process safety leadership, including hazard analysis and risk management.

Experience with hydrogen electrolyser systems, storage, compression, or dispensing units.
Knowledge of safety standards including IEC/BS EN 60079 and ISO 22734.
Experience in asset integrity management and reliability improvement strategies.
Skilled in process simulation, digital commissioning, and data analytics tools.
Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and support technical development.
Experience in high hazard industries with a focus on safety critical systems.

Qualifications:

Degree (BEng/MEng) in Chemical or Process Engineering or related field.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively working towards it (IChemE preferred).
Additional training such as NEBOSH Process Safety or functional safety certification (desirable).
Hydrogen-specific training (electrolysis, hazardous area design) is advantageous.
