Crime Paralegal
Reports to:
Supervising Solicitor
Job Purpose of the Paralegal
To provide support to solicitors in the Criminal Law team by preparing cases, managing documents, assisting clients, and ensuring the smooth running of criminal matters from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities of the Paralegal
Casework & Administration
• Prepare and manage case files.
• Maintain accurate records, diaries, and deadlines.
• Handle correspondence with courts, clients, and third parties.
Document Preparation
• Draft and proofread legal documents such as applications, statements, and trial
bundles and outcome letters .
• File documents with the court and relevant agencies.
Research & Evidence
• Carry out legal research on cases, precedents, and legislation.
• Review and organise disclosure, witness statements, and other evidence.
Client & Witness Contact
• Take initial instructions from clients.
• Arrange and attend client meetings, conferences, and prison visits.
• Liaise with witnesses and prepare them for hearings.
Court & Hearing Support
• Assist solicitors at court hearings and trials.
• Prepare and manage exhibits, trial bundles, and case papers.
Legal Aid & Case Funding
• Assist with legal aid applications and other case-related funding forms.
Person Specification of the Paralegal
Qualifications & Experience
• Law degree, LPC, or equivalent (desirable).
• Previous experience as a paralegal or in a criminal law setting (desirable but not
essential).
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures (advantageous).
Skills
• Strong organisational and time management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and case management systems.
Qualities needed for the Paralegal
• Professional, reliable, and proactive.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Team player with the ability to work independently.
• Commitment to client care and confidentiality.
