We have a fantastic opportunity to work within in our outstanding teamas a Bank Registered Nurse within a specialist palliative care unit.

We are looking to strengthen our team caring for palliative patients with complex needs. Utilising and developing your existing skills.

Working with senior staff, you will role model the St Gemmas values andbehaviour framework.

Main duties of the job

As a Bank Registered Nurse you will be expected to:

  • Care for a team of patients to an exceptional standard of care, with a1:5 ratio
  • Internal rotation from days to nights
  • You will be able to bring your exemplary communication skills which will enable you to interact with patients and families alike.
  • Prepared to work in a busy and emotive environment
  • Keen to work in a strong and vibrant multi-disciplinary team

Job responsibilities

Overall Purpose of the Role

Workin line with the NMC Code of Conduct. Demonstrating and providing evidence based high quality nursing care.

Provide direct patient care for a team ofpalliative care patients and end of life.

Supervise,teach and develop staff and students in the team.

1. Clinical/direct patient care

1.2 Build positive, trusted relationships with patients and families, ensuring they arecentral to care delivery and decision making.

1.4 Uphold and promote patient safety at alltimes.

1.5 Respondto feedback from patients and families and share with Senior Sister.

1.6 To communicate effectively with patients,carers, the MDT and all staff within the Hospice to promote effective teamwork.

1.7 Facilitating advance care planconversations.

1.8 Deliver concise and accurate information in handover and relevant meetings.

1.9 Communicate with other professionalsoutside the Hospice to facilitate continuity of care and actively be involved with discharge planning.

1.10 Ensure accurate and timely records of care (electronic and paper) are maintained,upholding information governance.

1.11 Actively promote hand hygiene and infection control policies to minimise infection risk.

2. Leadership and Collaborative Practice

2.1 Work in partnership with designated HCA to prioritise, organise and delegate workload.

2.3 Developskills and undertake training to take charge of the Hospice out of hours,liaising with other professionals, community patients and their families.

Deputise for the Sister on occasion, acting as ward co-ordinatorensuring the running of the ward is safe, effective and cohesive.

To support the Nurse in Charge ensuring effective staffing levels are maintained to meet patients needs through planned co-ordination of annual leave, study leave and using bank staff to cover unplanned absence.

3. Improving Quality and Developing Practice

3.1 Keep up to date with current developments,advances and research in palliative care.

3.2 Promote evidence based practice throughmembership of clinical groups.

3.3 Participate in audit and evaluation of clinical practice in the interests of promoting quality care.

3.4 Actively promote and participate inreflective practice and clinical supervision.

3.5 Deal with compliments and complaints when required.

4. Developing Self and Others

4.1 Develop knowledge and skills in line with agreed competency frameworks.

4.2 Undertakecontinuous professional development seeking opportunities to enhance skills andto participate as required in approved education programmes.

4.3 Actively contributes to their own andothers personal growth in specialist palliative care.

4.4 Provide education/training to others aspart of the ward nurse role.

4.5 Actas a Practice Assessor/Supervisor to nursing students and/or other professionals on placement within the Hospice.

5. General Duties and Responsibilities

All St Gemmas employees are required to abide by the Health and Safety at Work Act, attend annual mandatory training sessions and ensure thatthey comply with Hospice policies and procedures at all times.
