Position: Sister / Charge Nurse

Main duties of the job

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24-hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward / department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or department’s philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate, safe and quality care delivery.

By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost‑effective use of resources.

As an experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co‑ordinating activities on the ward or department, ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/department. The jobholder will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. They will act as a role model, promote quality evidence‑based practice, develop the nursing team and ensure effective management of the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

The role is pivotal in the success of the team.

Job description

Job Summary – L04/L05 Cardiac Critical Care.
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is a 15 bedded mixed level 3 and level 2 area. It specialises in the care of patients following complex heart surgery including coronary bypass grafts, valve replacements and aortic aneurysm surgery. The unit is one of the largest congenital heart units in the country and provides care to adults from across Yorkshire and Humber and further afield.

Staff have access to specialised training and competency assessments on specific advanced cardiac therapies. The unit also offers the cardiac advanced life support course.

Due to the unique specialist care that is required for effective and safe patient care, the post holder must be able to respond robustly and timely to the ever‑increasing demands and challenges that our critical care units (and wider CSU teams) bring. This includes supporting and mentoring newer and more junior team members who may not always have experience in critical care.
