Your Specific Responsibilities

Analyze complex plans and perform independent complex technical assignments to accomplish inspection and monitoring of work activities performed within the Right of Way. Verify that work is performed according to all State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes, rules. Performs approved testing techniques through the use of hand tools, gauges, and/or instruments to ensure materials used conform to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requirements.

Use various engineering tools, equipment, instruments and computers performing technical engineering tasks, problem solving and record keeping. Provide information to consulting engineers, developers, architects and permit applicants as needed. Prepares all documentation in order to validates payments to roadway contractors

Perform interpretation of documents related to authorized Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) device usage, installation/placement and materials to ensure safe work zones. Reviews work site activities for conformity to safety regulations and takes corrective measures when deficiencies are noted.

Conducts surveys of signs, guardrail, and attenuators as required by procedures. Provides survey of roadway items to be inventories for Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI). Fills out data coding sheet and enters roadway data into computer database as needed. Gathers data and performs preliminary reviews for maintenance contract needs. Assists in the preparation of maintenance contracts.

Conducts/attends pre-work conferences on maintenance contracts and attends/conducts meetings with contractors/utility owners/permit tees throughout life of projects assigned. Acts as a representative of the Department on all issues related to contracts and permits. Issues work documents on contracts as directed. Prepares and issues work documents on contracts as needed.

Performs plans reviews for constructability and adherence to Department standards and specifications. Provides comments on Department policies and procedures as requested.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of

  • This position requires the incumbent to complete the following self-study courses within 11 months of appointment:
    Construction Math and Plans Reading. Must also obtain the Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification and the Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification (Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the Stormwater, Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Training Program) within one year and maintain it.
