Job Summary
The Anthrozoology Lab Manager plays a critical role in managing the day‑to‑day operations of the Beacon College Anthrozoology Lab. This position oversees all aspects of laboratory activities aimed at advancing knowledge in areas of animal health and nutrition, ensuring the humane, responsible, and scientifically/instructionally sound use of the Beacon College animal collection. The Anthrozoology Lab Manager encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: primary caretaker of the animals in Anthrozoology Lab 1, 2, and the Second St.
Classroom; supervise, train, and mentor student employees and interns; and train, supervise, and develop the Animal Care team.

Duties and Tasks- Lab Operations Management
- Collaborate closely with the Chair of the Anthrozoology Department on matters related to animal care, health, and the animal care budget;
- Plan, organize, and supervise day‑to‑day operations of the Anthrozoology Lab;
- Provide animal care throughout the year, including during college breaks (Spring, Summer, Thanksgiving, and Winter), maintaining animal health and wellbeing;
- Transport animals in personal vehicle as needed
- Employee’s personal vehicle must have state compliant vehicle liability insurance as Beacon College’s vehicle insurance will not cover damage to the employee’s vehicle or to another vehicle if the employee is involved in an accident in their personal vehicle associated with the performance of these job duties;
- Beacon College’s workers compensation insurance must be notified should the employee suffer any injuries related to an auto accident while driving their personal vehicle for the performance of these job duties; the employee is required to notify Human Resources in the event of accident or injury;
- The employee will be reimbursed by Beacon College for any mileage driven in their personal vehicle at the current IRS‑approved mileage rate according to Finance Administrative Policies.
- Oversee and manage inventory for the Anthrozoology Lab to ensure the Lab has the materials needed to effectively and efficiently operate, with budget oversight and allocation provided by the Chair of the Anthrozoology Department;
- Maintain the organization and maintenance of the Anthrozoology Lab.
- Staff Supervision and Training
- Remain current in the field through self‑directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the supervisor;
- Recruit, train, and support student employees, interns, and others on the Animal Care team;
- Provide general supervision and oversight of lab operations and support staff.
- Safety and Compliance
- Maintain current knowledge of laboratory animal science as well as regulations and standards affecting the use of animals in research and education;
- Ensure all activities align with research objectives and comply with relevant regulations and protocols;
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including the handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials;
- Attend all required safety training and follow all safety policies and procedures;
- Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain a safe working environment;
- Maintain the organization of the Anthrozoology Lab ensuring a clean, clutter free, compliant and safe working environment.
- Data Management
- Maintain accurate and detailed records for the animals within the care of the Anthrozoology Lab.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
- Associate’s degree in Zoo Animal Technology or related field required;
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Biology, Zoology, Anthrozoology Animal Care, or a closely related field preferred;
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience caring for a variety of exotic animal species;
- Working knowledge of general computer operations and animal keeping software.
