Water Distribution Technician Apprentice - $18.08 per hour

This is an entry-level class in the Water Distribution Division. This class works under supervision on a training basis in the performance of a wide variety of routine unskilled to semi‑skilled water maintenance tasks that do not require previous water experience. General work is observed and reviewed during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures or exceptions to rules, are explained in detail as they arise.

The class is responsible for maintaining logs and records, and general system maintenance. The class works according to set procedures under direct supervision. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the III level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non‑directly related work experience.

Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Weekend, holiday and after‑hours work may be required, as well as after‑hours response and emergencies.

Water Distribution Technician III - $21.14 per hour

This class works under minimal supervision in the performance of a wide variety of routine semi‑skilled water maintenance tasks that requires previous water experience. General work is observed and reviewed during performance and upon completion and changes in procedures or exceptions to the rules are explained in detail as they arise. The class is responsible for maintaining logs and records, and general system maintenance.

The class works according to set procedures under minimal supervision. Employees at this level are expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to establishing procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the level II Operator. Since this class is typically used for employees that have prior related work experience, employees work under minimal supervision while completing job tasks.

Weekend, holiday and after‑hours work may be required, as well as after‑hours response and emergencies.

Responsibilities – Apprentice
  • Responds to complaints from public; resolves issues or refers to supervisor for resolution.
  • Maintains logs and records as required.
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, copying, and maintaining logs and records.
  • Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  • Lay and fit pipelines; make water line taps; install water services, fire hydrants, valves, and other water devices.
  • Excavate trenches and install shoring.
  • Identify service and main leaks; operate pipe locators; install and inspect backflow devices.
  • Read water distribution maps and as‑built plans and blueprint.
  • Perform emergency repairs to water lines as necessary; assist with proper traffic control devices.
  • Repair, maintain and install water meters and related service lines; read meters; turn services off and on as necessary.
  • Perform emergency locates, marking and notification.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • This position is subject to assigned on call rotation.
Responsibilities – Technician III
  • Responds to complaints from public; resolves issues or refers to supervisor for resolution.
  • Maintains logs and records as required.
  • Must be able to enter and complete work orders using computer‑based system.
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, copying, and maintaining logs and records.
  • Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  • Lay and fit pipelines; make water line taps; install water services, fire hydrants, valves, and other water devices.
