This is a responsible position in the LCPS Dispatch Center. An employee in this position is considered “essential personnel” and works as a team leader with other dispatchers to fulfill the communications needs of LCPS and other county agencies. This position also coordinates office, garage, and driver communications regarding staffing, substitutions, and daily operational adjustments. This position is technical in nature, requiring minimal supervision, and routinely interacts with other employees, agencies, and citizens.
Independent judgment is often used with established procedures in varying situations, with only unusual or unresolved problems referred to a supervisor.
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate
- Responds to calls, both telephone and radio, advising of the necessity for a substitute bus, driver, or attendant, and arranges for replacements
- Operates a two-way radio console in the absence of the regularly assigned dispatcher
• Handles all communications through the dispatch center, including emergencies, bus accidents, and breakdowns. - Answers all incoming calls for Transportation from parents, schools, and concerned citizens;
- Oversees the area assigned logbooks, ensuring run coverage is efficient and equitable
• Assists the Dispatch Area Supervisor in overseeing the day-to-day operations for the Transportation Dispatch Center - Serves as lead worker to dispatchers, and assists with training and support for daily operations
- Ensures all bus routes are covered due to absences, breakdowns, and emergencies.
- Assists drivers and attendants with directions, maintains a thorough understanding of their routes and provides information when requested.
- Coordinates help to those in need out in the field to include emergency services, including but not limited to missing students, medical emergencies, and bus accidents
- Serves as first line of contact to all parties to inform of all emergency situations in the absence of the Dispatch Area Supervisor
- Assists Dispatch Area Supervisor in working closely with Safety & Security on school emergencies
- Assists Dispatch Area Supervisor in random drug notifications in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations
- Assists in report preparation from dispatch for the Director for data reporting to the Chief Operations Officer
- Assists Dispatch Area Supervisor with staff performance evaluation
- Serves as first line on the phone to resolve issues with parents, school administrators and other citizens who call
- Utilizes transportation and dispatch software for daily operations and training purposes
- Drives or attend on school bus, as needed
Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.
EducationHigh School Diploma or GED
ExperienceTwo (2) years of transportation dispatcher experience or related transportation experience
Licenses and CertificationsMust continuously maintain a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsement
Must continuously maintain current required certifications and complete all related training
